Hope you have been having a good start to this academic year.

The student ramblers are back!

In fact, the next walk being organised - the first one for this academic year! - is on Sunday the 31st of October. Will will meet at Dingli, specifically at St. Magdalene's Chapel* at 14:30 hrs. Will tour the cliffs, stopping to observe anything of note. The first part of the walk will finish at an undisclosed (:)), very nice and quiet location. We will take a break there. The second part of the walk will take us through the quiet village, and we will finish off where we started (i.e. at St. Magdalene's Chapel).

Coming from Rabat to Dingli, you have to keep going straight till you reach the Dingli cemetery. Take the LEFT when you arrive at it and just follow the road. After some 800m you will find the chapel (there open space in front of it). Please do contact us if you need transport; we'll see what we can do to provide it :).

Trail: Scenic: We shall start from San Duminku church and go through the Liemu valley. Then we will reach Ta' Baldu area and eventually we will find our way to is-Simblija.

Rating: Moderate, including some walking along the cliffs

Rating of Walk: Fairly smooth

Trail: Scenic and historical: We shall start from Tas-Silg chapel and go through the Xrobb l-Ghagin area, following the perimeter wall of the area from which Deutsche Welle used to broadcast. At one point we take a country lane at the periphery of Delimara's cliffs, and keep following it to up to Kalanka, going through Peter's Pool. We shall then see take a side road towards Fort Delimara, at the end of which lies a stunning view of Marsaxlokk harbour, where we can take a short break. We'll then be off back to the Tas-Silg chapel via the main Delimara road, with Marsaxlokk village visible, to our left, most of the time.

Ramblers to visit Malta's lakes 10/2/10 [14:00]

Date: Wednesday, 10th February

Time: 2.00pm (sharp!)

Meeting Place: Bidnija parish church

Duration: About 2.5 hrs, depending on pace and stops

Length: ca 5 km

Attire: Good walking shoes/boots suitable for muddy terrain. An umbrella in case of a drizzle

Rating of Walk: Fairly smooth with some muddy terrain

Trail: Scenic: Walk will start from Bidnija and will descend towards Ghajn Rihana. We will then go round the beautiful Ghajn Rihana valley enjoying a number of lakes (which would by then be hopefully full of water). Before starting our ascent back to Bidnija, we shall stop for a short break near a chapel. Finally, we will make our way back to Bidnija enjoying beautiful scenes of the eastern part of the Maltese island.

Attire: Good walking shoes. An umbrella in case of a drizzle

Rating of Walk: Fairly smooth

Trail: Scenic and cultural: Walk will start from Zurrieq and will descend towards Wied Babu. We will then descend further and will be able to see the Blue Grotto from this vantage point. The walk will then proceed towards Qrendi through the countryside until St.Matthew's Chapel is reached. At this point, we shall stop for a short break, where the members will be able to admire the secluded wonders of Maqluba. After this break, we will make our way through Qrendi and back to our starting point in Zurrieq.

Student rambler walks start (Times of Malta 15/11/2009)

Over 20 University students and their friends recently took part in the first walk organised by the Malta Student Ramblers for the academic year 2009-2010. The group was formed last February as a branch of the Malta Ramblers' Association.

The group met on a Sunday afternoon near the former government winery at Buskett and visited the Clapham Junction cart ruts, Għar il-Kbir cave, Girgenti, Laferla Cross, Fawwara, Tal-Karmnu chapel, Dingli Cliffs, Ġebel Ciantar and the silos at the Bronze Age village at Il-Wardija ta' San Ġorġ.

Rating of Walk: Fairly smooth but with two rather steep inclines and some rough terrain

Trail: Scenic and cultural: Our route will take us to Ghar il-Kbir and Clapham Junction (we stop to see these two sites at the end of the walk), Il-Girgenti, past the Inquisitor's Palace, Ta' Zuta Quarry, is-Salib tal-Gholja (Laferla Cross), Il-Fawwara and its chapels, Gebel Ciantar, back to Ghar il-Kbir and then to starting point.

What do we do in case of heavy rain? We postpone the walk to the following Sunday, same time, same place. Notice will be given on this blog at least 2 hours in advance.

The walks offered by Student Ramblers will still remain free for university students and their friends. However, anyone wishing to officially join the Ramblers Association of Malta (RAM) can do so by filling in the available form (with a minimal fee of 5 euros for a whole year) with numerous walks organized regularly.

A group of students from the University of Malta, reading for degrees in computer programming, medicine, engineering and languages, tore themselves away from their books and joined a walk organised for them and their friends by the Ramblers' Association of Malta.
The group included three students, one hailing from Ethiopia, another from Italy and the third from Russia, who are studying here. The route taken happened to be "foreign" even to all the local students.
The walk, which set off from the church of our Lady of Itria, limits of Mġarr, trailed the Victoria Lines in the Binġemma area and skirted the Għemieri (Gomerino) estate.
Walk leader Frank Ventura pointed out the more interesting features along the route: forts, gaps and history of the Victoria Lines, the Great Fault, cave dwellings, cart ruts, etymology of the place names and the more common plants flourishing in garigue and maquis.
Given the positive feedback, and motivated also by the fact that some of the young participants looked like they needed some exercise - they had some difficulty keeping the pace set by the seasoned veterans - RAM will be helping the University group organise other walks.

ATTIRE: Long trousers, possibly jeans, and good walking shoes.

TRAIL: Scenic and cultural - We drive up to the chapel of Our Lady of Ittria at the Bingemma Gap where our walk will start. Here we get our first view of the Victoria Lines; we take a footpath across the fields to Bingemma Hill, climb up to Bingemma Fort, pass through the Gomerino Estate (Ghemieri Palace), double back towards Nadur Tower, see the cart ruts and go back to the starting place skirting a part of the Victoria Lines.

INDEMNITY CLAUSE: One’s safety during our walks is ultimately one’s own responsibility. RAM declines all responsibility for any personal injury or loss of belongings during walks.
